My location isn't working

You open Whympr but the blue dot doesn't appear on the map, or your location is way off from where you actually are? Here are the steps to check, in order.

1. Check your location permissions

This is the most common cause. Whympr needs access to your location to work.

On iPhone:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services
  • Find Whympr in the list
  • Select “While Using the App” or “Always”

On Android:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Whympr > Permissions
  • Enable Location
  • If given the option, select “Always” or “While using”

⚠️ If you choose “Never,” Whympr won’t be able to track your location at all.

2. Check that your phone’s GPS is enabled

GPS must be enabled at the system level, not just within the app.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure the main toggle is turned on (green).

On Android: Swipe down the notification panel and make sure the Location icon is turned on. You can also go to Settings > Location.

3. Go outside

The GPS signal only works with a clear view of the sky. Inside a building, in a basement, or in a parking garage, the signal is usually absent or very weak—this is normal.

Once outside, give the app a few seconds to acquire the signal. The initial acquisition can take up to 30 seconds depending on your location and conditions.

4. Force close the app and reopen it

Sometimes, simply restarting the app is enough.

On iPhone: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-tap the Home button), find Whympr, and swipe it up to close it. Reopen it.

On Android: Tap the square button (recent apps), close Whympr, then reopen it.

5. Restart your phone

If the problem persists, completely restart your device. A restart resets the GPS modules and often resolves temporary glitches.

6. Check for app updates

An outdated version of Whympr can cause location issues.

  • App Store (iPhone): Search for “Whympr” and check if an “Update” button is available.
  • Play Store (Android): Do the same from your app library.

7. Check that you’re not in power-saving mode

Your phone’s power-saving mode may disable or limit GPS to conserve battery life.

On iPhone: Settings > Battery > turn off Low Power Mode.

On Android: Settings > Battery > turn off Power Saving Mode (or Battery Saver, depending on the device).

8. As a last resort: uninstall and reinstall the app

If none of the steps above work, uninstall Whympr and then reinstall it from the App Store or Play Store.

💡 Your tracks and outings are saved to your Whympr account: you won’t lose any data by reinstalling the app.
